Before reading this article I found it to be very disturbing. After reading it, I realized all of the stipulations these patients endured before assisted suicide was even an option.
The patients needed to be 18 years or older, with a mentally healthy record, and required two separate doctors stating they had no more than 6 months to live. Also one of the main points to myself, was that the patients were all voluntary and well informed.
Thaddeus Mason Pope is the main person I discovered supporting this life changing decision. Some debaters I found were Ira Byock that basically said it is common to not be in the right state of mind, and this is a very serious decision and life changing to all involved. Anita Freeman wrote about this subject from a very different view. She told her own personal story of her sister passing from stage 4 cancer. The entire time her sister no longer wanted to be in pain, and just wanted to leave this world. Ania mentioned how painful it was to watch her sister slowly fade away. Later her sister was prescribed phenobarbital injections that helped her go in peace.
After reading all different views on this, I remain on the fence. When I first came across this article, I was completely against it. I thought it was completely inhumane and not right. After reading Anita Freeman's article, that completely swayed me to think maybe it could be the right thing to do. This entire subject is completely disturbing and upsetting to me, I'm sad that anyone's mind could even come to this conclusion.
