I forgot how easy it was to imagine myself in Ander's shoes while reading "Bullet in the Brain". I remember specifically while reading this story I thought the scene of the robbers was going in slow motion. I think that's how I would process everything going on around me if I were Anders. When I recall the first few minutes of finding out about Amanda's death, everything was in slow motion, the sunshine didn't matter, the dog barking at me made no noise, the sun beating on my face had no warmth. I've certainly come to terms with my best friend's passing over and I am now certain she is happy again.

For this blog post I will create an annotated bibliography for my research paper for my English Composition II course at Delaware Community College.
Source 1: For this first source I discovered some of the different views on racism. As well as how psychologist view these specific outlooks. I found this article very interesting considering it dealt a bit with my major. This source is relevant to my paper because in order to express my views on racism, I must first explain how people use it. Mageli, Paul D. Psychology of Racism. Salem Press Encyclopedia, 1999. http://eds.a.ebscohost.com.libdb.dccc.edu/eds/detail/detail?sid=53607243-edb7-43c0-ac6c-83d82d39e6a3%40sessionmgr4004&vid=0&hid=4110&bdata=JnNpdGU9ZWRzLWxpdmU%3d#db=ers&AN=96397595 Source 2: This source showed me the possible future of racism. It gave more of an optimistic view on how we can end such hatred. This source pertains to my paper greatly because it gives myself and my readers hope in equality. Arthur, Mikaila Mariel Lemonik. Ending Racism and Discrimination. Research Starters Sociology (Online Edition), 2009.http://eds.a.ebscohost.com.libdb.dccc.edu/eds/detail/detail?sid=8b52416c-7dea-4992-ba62-1a266ace84af%40sessionmgr4005&vid=0&hid=4110&bdata=JnNpdGU9ZWRzLWxpdmU%3d#db=ers&AN=89185451 Source 3: Lastly, the movie American History X. In class we watched this movie and were asked to create a research question out of it. This source is the main source in my entire paper, because I will be tying everything back to the movie, and why racism pertains to my project. Kaye, Tony, John Morrissey, David McKenna, Jon Hess, Edward Norton, Edward Furlong, and Stacy Keach. American History X. S.l.: New Line Home Video, 1999. Step by step process to find an article.
By following this step by step process I entered in the search engine “correctional education.” The title of this article is The Impact of an Associate's Degree Program for Incarcerated Students: A Randomized Trial of the Correctional Education Association College of the Air Program and the authors are Meyer, Stephen J.; Randel, Bruce. http://search.ebscohost.com.libdb.dccc.edu/login.aspx?direct=true&db=eric&AN=EJ1019096&site=eds-live Credit to Innyi Ju for the help to create this blog post. Research Question: Why does racial hatred continue to exist in our more tolerant society?
Purpose: My research paper will inform, analyze, and educate my audience of the narrow-views of our society. Audiences: My primary audience for this research paper is my professor, Mangini. My secondary audience will be my fellow class mates, friends, and family. Style/Tone: I will follow the MLA format for my paper. The overall tone will be critical, yet positive. Thesis Statement: The movie American History X has led me to question why racism continues to exist in our so claimed racial tolerant society. Product: The product of my research paper will be 5-7 pages long, including 3 sources, typed, and double spaced. Derek had an obvious major conflict, in my opinion. I believe Man vs. Self is the most reasonable one for this film. Derek had to face the choices he made that affected the rest of his life. For example, he was brought up by his father whom believed ethnic groups was the main reasoning for whites "suffering". With this narrow view of thinking, Derek joined a hatred group "the skin heads" who basically made up for their suffering by killing, raping, or torturing the different races in the community. Derek eventually became incarcerated and while in prison had a change of heart. After being released Derek expressed his feelings to his family and friends. In the end, Danny, Derek's younger brother, ended up suffering the consequences of his own hatred towards different ethnicity, and was killed. Derek ended up suffering for his own actions by losing his brother. Racism and hatred were two obvious themes throughout the entire film. Prison society mirrored home society because the hatred behind bars continued even after Derek was released from jail. Doris and Davina symbolized Derek's thoughts after life in prison, and somewhat symbolized not so narrowed thoughts that Derek lacked prior to prison. In ten years from now, I can see Derek living a happy life with a family he made. He will always suffer the loss of his brother, but I can see Danny's death contributing to a more positive life style for Derek in the long run.
In the film "American History X" there were numerous social institutions that stuck out to me while watching the movie. One major institution that is portrayed throughout the entire movie is the fact that the main character Derek was involved in an anti non-caucasian group "skin heads". This group certainly shaped Derek's world views. He was raised by his father who viewed minorities as a nuisance and later was killed. Derek blamed his death on the people he learned to hate, and continued his hatred until incarceration. While in jail, Derek was forced to have a change of heart. Unfortunately he was "forced" to change his views in a very degrading way. Racism contributed to Derek's outlook on life greatly, from being the head of a racial discrimination group, to going to jail and learning to accept ethnic groups as equals.
While watching only half of the movie "American History X" I feel like I could write a summary of the entire movie. A murder scene starts the movie, with the main character Derek (Edward Norton) killing a black male. From then forward a theme of racial hate is carried through. A group of white people create a gang due to other races taking their jobs, underpaying illegal immigrants, and basically racism. Derek, once the leader of the white gang also known as skinheads, has a change of heart while incarcerated.
For this blog post I will be composing a literary analysis of my Out Of Place writing assignment. The purpose of this paper was to explain a point in time where I've felt like I didn't belong. This came easy to me considering the week prior to writing my first draft I was in a car accident. After editing my first draft and creating the second draft, my professor requested a multigenre story. A multigenre story is one story, told in numerous ways. For example, a poem could be used in part of the writing, or simply photos and videos.
Literary Analysis: Who?: Myself, my sister, and the woman driving the other car What?: Car accident When?: February 9th 2015 Where?: Route 30 and Arsenal Road Why?: A woman switched lanes while I was yielding onto the high way. One movie that I thoroughly enjoyed watching and think would be a great research paper to write about is RENT. Another movie is Closer. Lastly, All Good Things. Dear Amanda,
My professor asked the class to read a short story and summarize it to someone in a letter. We read “A Fable for the Living” by Kevin Brockmeier. The story starts out as a place in the country that does not physically exist. The characters in the story are described as some living and some deceased. The living didn’t simply speak to their dead loved ones out loud, they would write letters to them and lay them in deep rifts formed in dirt. They believed this was the way to speak to their loved ones who passed over. A woman loses her husband and puts her letters in the dirt, which surprisingly he replies in his own letters. The reason I am writing you this letter is because you left this earth 6 days ago, and when I read the woman’s pain and how she felt after losing someone important to her, it reminded me of the pain I felt losing you. I feel the need to write to you from my place of sadness. It kills me knowing that addiction got the best of you, and is the reason you left this world in the first place. I wish that I could write you letters and receive a reply, but I know you listen every time I talk out loud to you. The only thing that gives me piece of mind is knowing you are now pain free, free from this disease, and reunited with your mother. I love you and I look forward to the day I get to see your contagious smile again, Alexis |
